As long distance moving and relocation company, we understand that moving is not easy on anyone but for kids it is an especially difficult time. They are saying “goodbye” to friends, familiar surroundings, and ingrained routine.
Here are some tips on how to help your kids adjust to the new move.
- Be honest: Don’t try to sugarcoat the news or make promises you may not be able to keep.
- Keep it simple: Give them the facts and answer any questions they may have.
- Reassure them: Let them know that they are still an important part of the family and that this move will benefit them as well.
Include them in the process: If possible, involve them in the move by letting them help with packing or choosing their new bedroom.- Be positive: Try to focus on the positive aspects of the move and look forward to the new adventure.
- When you arrive at your new home: show your kids around the new neighborhood, introduce them to the new neighbors and help them find their new favorite places. The more involved they are in the move, the easier it will be for them to adjust.
- Once everything is unpacked and you’ve settled into your new routine: take some time to reflect on the experience with your kids. Talk about the things they liked and didn’t like about the move and help them to see the positive aspects of the change.
- After a few months in your new home it’s normal for kids to experience some homesickness after a move. Be patient and understanding as they adjust to their new surroundings and routines. Encourage them to stay in touch with friends and family from their old home and to make new friends in their new environment.
We truly hope this helps and good luck on your move!
