Moving internationally is exciting, but it is by no means a walk in the park. There’s just so much to do in so little time, and missing any detail can mean delays in your move. To make sure you reach your relocation destination smoothly, it is important you create a plan of what to do. We have curated this international moving checklist of all the essentials to help you have a stress-free relocation experience.

Select An International Moving Company

Due to the complexity of overseas shipments, before embarking on your big move, you should first engage a moving company that can assist you with international relocation. These companies have experience in packing and shipping items overseas and are familiar with the laws and regulations of different countries, including the one you are about to move to.

Set A Schedule

No matter how far ahead in the future your move is, it is important you plan a list of tasks to handle before you leave. There are certain key tasks you will need to get done at least one month before your departure.

  • Book Your Flights
  • Source For Your New Bank: It is advisable to open a new bank account in the destination country to make your transactions easier. Do notify your current bank in advance before your move as your credit cards may get frozen upon making your primary purchase there.
  • Settle Your Mail and Subscriptions: You should set up mail forwarding to ensure that you won’t miss out on any important mail. Likewise, update subscription and delivery providers, such as Netflix, on your new address. Remember to cancel those subscription services that will not be available in your new location.
  • Pack and Downsize: It’s always good to start packing early. Sort through all your belongings and pack them in labeled, categorized boxes. For fragile items, use foam and bubble wrap to protect them before packing. While you’re packing, you can look out for items that you no longer want or need anymore. Set them aside to sell, donate or throw away to make your shipping load lighter.

Prepare the Right Documents

Regardless of your purpose of moving abroad, relocating internationally requires lots of documentation and paperwork. The most important documentation is your passport. If it is about to expire soon, you should get it renewed soonest as you will need to wait for up to 14 weeks to receive your new passport upon submission for renewal.

If you are relocating for work, you will have to apply for a work visa/permit. Do thorough research in advance on visa application requirements of the destination country. You should ensure that you have all important documents with you, such as but not limited to birth certificates, marriage certificates, driver’s licenses, medical records, insurance policies, financial records, and customs forms.

Find A Home

Start on your house search as early as possible. It is a process that takes time as choosing a home is a big decision. Do your research on local real estate sites. Make a list of several places and schedule tours when you are there. If you have yet to decide on a permanent place, you can go with a short-term lease through sites like Airbnb and stay there till you have found the perfect home for yourself.
